First off, I am not a HUGE BBQ fan, so take this review as you wish.... It seems like most other restaurants, that even with the different BBQ establishments in the area, I tend to have favorites and typically dine there as I am craving their ___________ (fill in appropriately per establishment). I have been to all 3 locations, probably the skywalk and 2nd Avenue the most. The problem I have with the majority of the BBQ places is that their sides are generally meh and carb loaded-+. Smokey D's is no different. Why do I come here? I like their Beef Brisket sandwich and their burnt ends. My husband is probably more of a fan than I am. But he generally is when it comes to BBQ. :)

Manhandler or I'd prefer to rename this sandwich as manhandled because it was one massive sandwich I ordered 2, 1 chicken turkey & sausage with pepper jack cheese and brisket burnt ends and chopped pork with pepper jack and extra extra fire BBQ sauce next time I'm back in Iowa I'm definitely coming back for burnt ends and you can't beat $3.00 beer :)

BBQ ON THE MIND? Well this is a place to come. Locally owned. The parking lot is always packed when you drive by. I think this visit might have to be redone. I came into a Bbq place and didn't order Bbq. My bad. What was I thinking? A burger sounded really good so I got the Tuesday special. Comes with fries and drink. Maybe it was me but not quite the taste I was expecting. The wait staff shuffles through every few minutes and delivers food after you sit down. My husband got a two tenderloin meal with warm potato casserole. Holy moly that was a lot of food. I did trade him a little piece of his tenderloin for my smoked burger. Much better. With loaded up pickles and onions to top it off I happy ate a small portion of his meal. Trophies litter the floor along the halfway and checks and ribbons are all over the walls. I should have sampled the bbq like a smart person. They were quick and tasty but the burger was smaller and just not what I was hankering. I'll be back.

The BBQ meat was excellent. I had the Burnt Ends, and the meat was great. But, they came out on a cheap, stale hot-dog bun. The bun was terrible. At the time I thought it was just because it was stale, but now I suspect they had put it in a microwave, which made it hard (I could be wrong, and maybe it was just stale). Regardless, the cheap bun was a total detraction from the meat. I complained, and some young supposed-manager kid came over to apologize, not really saying that he knew it was stale or not. But, to put great BBQ meat on a crummy hot-dog bun, stale or not, was being too cheap. A good product is in the totality, and this bun was totally bad. In paying top price for BBQ I expect to get great BBQ, bun and presentation. Two out of three is not enough. I've stopped several times on my travels, but I'll search elsewhere in the future. If you go, skip those items on buns! Order in front, pay, and someone delivers to your table. Self-service on soft-drinks. A good variety of BBQ sauces on the table.' Rich

RIB SHACK KNOXVILLE, IOWA tastes WAY ALOT BETTER THAN THE FOOD SERVE IN THIS RESTO! Never buy the FARM BOY! Too sloppy! Presentation per se is too messy! This can feed 4-6 people but if you order this, it surely would KILL your both kidneys! WAY TOO MUCH SALT content! Think about this: FRIES IS SALTED. They added country gravy, SALTED too. Tenderloin, salted. Worse, they added bacon bits AND shredded cheese! BAD BAD BAD FOOD!!! Waste of money!

If you haven't been to Smokey D's yet, why? This is THE spot for BBQ. I've been tons of times, let me give you a rundown of how awesome they are. First of all, my office scheduled a large size event and they provided nachos and lots of appetizers. It. Was. Great. They made it easy to put together and separated everything so the chips weren't soggy. The event was a little crazy trying to get everything together, but it was delicious and everyone loved the nachos. Second, we've been in the back room - I'm not sure if we scheduled it or not - but the bartender was super friendly and we got our food quickly. I had salad with chicken on the side and it was sooooo good. Finally, when I go with friends or family, I mostly stick with their chicken, but really all their meat choices are delicious. I always share and steal others' food, and it's always good. Super quick, the food is hot and fresh, and you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It's not good for you, but it's delicious.

Stopped in for some comfort food as I know this place never dissiponts me. I love seeing all the rewards and smoking trophies lining the walls. The people are great and always busy cleaning. The menu is huge I've had all the smoked meats and never can get enough of them I settled this time with a tenderloin to try new menu item, when she asked if I wanted 2 buns I knew it would be huge. It was lol still hanging off the bun. Wasn't the best I've ever had but for a smoke shop it was great. I like the homemade BBQ sause at the tables and the chill environment to eat. You do walk into a short order type place then you are seated. They bring you hot food fast and you fill\refill your own drinks. The bar has specials most days and I like how local this place is. You should give it a try

Excellent bbq restaurant! I've been here twice now, and love it! Ribs nearly fall off the bone, smoked, homemade sausage on the spicy side, burnt ends & brisket nice n' juicy! The sides I've had so far are fair to great, Mac n' cheese is ok, baked beans are good, and I highly recommend the potato casserole (mix in some bbq sauce!) P. S. We tried the buffalo wings tonight, I believe they are smoked as well. Bone-in, great crunch, and good flavor. I'd say a medium on the heat level...

This BBQ joint has been on my bucket list for quite some time. When I convinced my wife to camp near Des Moines just so that we can go to Smokey D's, I was thrilled. And Smokey D's did not disappoint!! The owners are very well-known on the competition BBQ circuit, and they crank out some righteously tasty 'cue and sides. Service and food delivery was really fast! Now on to the food... the nachos were awesome! The pork on there was succulent, and I appreciated the use of BBQ rub on the chips to add a touch of salty flavor. And the portion we ordered (the half order) was HUGE!! The half-order could have been a meal for one person. My wife ordered the chopped pork sandwich and baked beans, and she raved about both items! Her words that she kept using were "perfectly balanced" -- not too spicy, too sweet, or too bland. I ordered the ribs and burnt ends with mac & cheese and potato casserole. The ribs and burnt ends were super tender and flavorful! The meats came out unsauced, and frankly they did not need any sauce. The potato casserole was hearty and delicious, but it may be a touch greasy for others. The mac and cheese was rich and creamy as well. For dessert, I ordered the apple dumpling, while my wife got one of the cherry bites. The apple dumpling was warm, rich, and satisfying. The cherry bite may have been the only disappointing part of the meal. While it was tasty, it was not what my wife was expecting. Overall, Smokey D's totally deserves the reputation that it has and is totally worth the trip there! Easy five-stars from me!

Really good BBQ place. Very inexpensive, fast, friendly service. We ordered a ton of food for a big party and food came out fresh within 5 mins. I had the burnt ends sandwich and it was delicious. Worth a stop by if u r on the area.

I don't think I can add too much to the reviews here that nearly 100 other great reviewers have covered.....but I'll add my two cents worth. We came on a Saturday at about 3pm and they weren't too busy. When we ordered the girl taking our order was very helpful. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich with a side of garlic bread. Our order arrived quickly and as we finished our plates were removed in a timely manner. The beef brisket was AWESOME! The bun came toasted and I added some spicy bbq sauce to it. The garlic bread was good, it could have been more buttery, though.(Bandana's in Ankeny has the best). Before we left it started to get busy, very busy. Getting out of the car park was a nightmare, more cars coming in and you just had to be patient to wait and get out. Whoever designed the lot needs to get a remedial engineering course. On Harley nights over at Zook's its even harder to navigate things. I'm not a crowd person, but this is all worth it!

Been here many times and is always fantastic. I always get their nachos. I have never had better and I consider myself a nacho connoisseur. :) Burnt ends are great. There is really nothing that we have had that has been bad. Always friendly service. Clean and well staffed. To go door is behind the building if you want to skip the line and grab the food you ordered ahead of time. We will keep coming back as their prices are honest and they work hard at what they do.

After reading the hype, this was the place we planned to stop on our cross-country road trip. We pulled up to this crazy busy place to notice something...no smoke, as in no smokey smell, no smoke puffs, nothing. Strange as most BBQ joints have the delicious meat smell emerging that makes one salivate. The gang of us got our food and none of us seemed overly pleased. The ribs were pretty good but not great. The potato casserole was greasy beyond belief and ignited heartburn right away. The cucumber salad was more vinegar than cucumber and the garlic bread was served cool and flavorless. I think the best side were the potato chips and that isn't a great achievement. On a positive note, the prices weren't too expensive for BBQ. Overall, this is not a place we will visit again because we felt this place should be renamed Smokey Disappointment.

I eat here often, but last week was the first time I tried the apple dumpling. It was great! Pretty much like a warm slice of fresh apple pie. The potato casserole was good as always. The spares were cooked perfect, but the pulled pork wasn't on this day. Overall a good visit. I usually get the tips. They are my favorite.

I've been here several times. This place makes me happy that I have business in the area. The burnt ends and cheesy potato casserole are all I've ever gotten. It's so good, I can't imagine anything better. Great service and staff. This is a must visit place for anyone within 40 miles. I'm going again tomorrow and can't wait!!

They are comfy and quick, the food is delicious and you wont be disappointed by the price. Its well worth the stop and i loved the happening of Guy Fieri being there. He knows his food from Diners Drive ins an Dives! Make sure you ask for lots of napkins you will need em!!

We arrived and were a little confused as to how the restaurant operated. Apparently you line up to the left to place your order, then after paying you are issued a number where someone eventually delivers your food. The service here was ridiculously fast and the servers are friendly. Other than having your food delivered to you by the staff, everything else is self serve. We ordered the half slab BBQ ribs platter which included 6 ribs and two sides. I tried the potato casserole and the mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was very watery but the potato casserole tasted pretty good. The meat was so tender they were fall off the bone, and the bone was so soft sometimes they even broke in half. I like that the tables offer a lot of napkins and also three types of BBQ sauce--mild, medium, and hot. My favorite was the medium. Definitely a great place for ribs. We arrived at 530pm on a Friday evening and the place was already pretty busy. By 6pm the place had gotten much more crowded. Thankfully the restaurant has A LOT of seating to accommodate the crowds.

Came here during lunch and this place gets busy for good reason. No matter what you get off the menu, it will be delicious. A coworker and I came here around 11:45, right before the lunch crowd hit and ordered a half order of pork nachos to share. Why share you ask? Because all the servings here are huge, just like they should be at bbq joint. I usually order a Turkey Club for lunch but wanted to something different. So far this place has the best nachos I have ever had. The cheese, the meat and the chips were just all delicious. Food is always consistent, no matter what location you go to but this one is my favorite

One of the best places in Des Moines to get great bbq!! Their daily specials are their secret specials - Tuesday smoked cheeseburger is one of our favorites. It is only served on TuEsdays. Must try is the BBQ nachos either chicken or pork the 1/2 order easily feeds 2 adults. The tenderloin is massive and delic. Kids platter come on a frisbee and the chicken strips are one of a kind.

Best BBQ restaurant around! Always busy, if you go on the weekend, get there early. The meats served are so juicy and flavorful , no barbecue sauce is needed(its on the table if you really want it). The ribs are almost fall of the bone, the way it should be.The turkey and the brisket are my favorite. Then their are the sides. Potato casserole, and the mac and cheese are the top picks for me. Mac is smokey, with a touch of heat. I have never had the desert, I'm always to full. Highly recommend!!

Decent, but not great. Had the mac and cheese and the beans for sides and they were a-ok. The beans had a nice smokey flavor to them, but they weren't exceptional, could have used a little kick. Mac and cheese was also solid, but again, nothing that made it exceptional. For the meats on my platter I chose the turkey and brisket, since those are pretty much my standards along with sausage. Normally I like to get all three, but since this isn't Texas, it's not meat market style. The turkey was pretty good, slices a little thin, but still moist. Couldn't see much of a smoke ring, but could still detect some smoke flavor. The big problem with the thin slices here is that it pretty much eliminates getting any of the rub. The brisket was the biggest let down. What's with the deli thin slices? Slicing it that thin lets out all of the juice, making it quite dry. There was a decent smoke ring here, and the flavor was ok, but not great. As with the turkey, the thin slices eliminated any of the rub making it into my belly.

My family and our friends stopped here on our way to Oshkosh, WI because we had seen it on Triple D's on FoodNetwork. After a day full of driving we wanted a really good meal, and a place to sit and relax. . . we picked just that. The restaurant was definitely family friendly, and had a ton of seating everywhere. I ordered the burnt ends with coleslaw and baked beans - WOW! I am not usually a huge bbq fan, but this was delicious. The burnt ends are tender and very filling. I would order them again next time.

I have eaten at BBQ Joints all over this country and this is some of the best. My dining partner said that it is very consistent and always great. One of my pet peeves is that most places overcook for that "falling off the bone" mush. I call it "Caucasian Style" and not true Pit BBQ style. The rub is wonderful and sides are delish. The potato salad had horseradish in it. 8-)

We ate dinner here last night with a group from big barn harley davidson. Everything was fantastic from the service to the food. Best ribs we've ever had and the brisket was out of this world. Will definitely stop in Shao when we're at the dealership.

I go to the award wining BBQ headquarters called Smokey D's. He has the walls lined with trophies and plaques for winning BBQ contests. I love both the beef brisket dinner plate meal and the rib dinner plate meal. You get a choice of one meat with two sides. I like to horse radish potatoes salad and the cole slaw. A meal runs about $9 so the prices are very reasonable. The restaurant is always full of customers when I am there. You stand in line to order and then go find your own table to sit. A waitress brings the food out to your table within 5 minutes and picks up the plastic tab number of your order. You are in and out quickly. They have a big carry out business. Smokey D's is a big employer of the high school youth in our rural township and a very good corporate citizen. I go there to eat one or more times a week.

I had been waiting to try this place for years and finally got the chance to last night! First, I am glad I read the reviews before coming here because I did not know this was going to be a order-at-the-counter eatery. Know this beforehand so you know to go straight to the counter and not stand around waiting to be seated. The atmosphere was nice, classic BBQ restaurant look, amazing smells of course. The menu is not extensive, but it may help to pull it up before coming so you do not feel pressured to order fast because you are in a line. I ordered the Dinner platter, the two meats were beef brisket and sausage, with mac and cheese and pasta salad as the sides. The fiance got the full rack of ribs with potato casserole and cucumber coleslaw as the sides. We took our seat near the TV and waited for the food. The wait was not long at all, shorter than a standard restaurant, longer than fast food. First thing I noticed the portions for my platter was not huge , but well worth it for the price I was paying. The ribs are big portioned and probably the best price in town. Now for the taste...ribs were great, but I've definitely had better in my life. The sausage was flavorful and cooked well. The mac and cheese and potato casserole were the surprise of the night, extra cheesy and very good! The toasts that came with the menus were also great, very flavorful. The negatives...the beef brisket was a bit disappointing, it was good taste wise, but it was dry and sliced thinly. I was expecting something amazing and was given average, I may have been expecting too much. The cucumber coleslaw and pasta salad were okay for a few bites and the bottom started tasting not fantastic. We were here for the Iowa State game basketball game, their first game in the tournament. The atmosphere was great, lots of fans and we enjoyed the game with a nice glass of Blue Moon. I am excited to come back and try all their other meats and side dishes!

My favorite area restaurant. Ribs are the best. Pickle chips are fantastic. Sides are great. Turkey sandwich is moist. Overall, a fantastic BBQ joint with excellent service / wait staff. Better than Jethros / Daves / etc. Place is just great! I've used them numerous times for catering (meat by the pound). Great price, food is hot, and is very convenient. This is a first class organization! My favorite place!

Been here three times now and impressed with something new each time. First time was a work event so we were in one of their private rooms in the back. The spread was a buffet with chopped pork, wings, BBQ nachos and potato salad. The winner on this buffet was the BBQ nachos. Crispy chips with chopped pork, BBQ sauce and cheese. Very tasty! The second time we indulged at Smokey' D's we were meeting some friends late evening on a Saturday night (8:30ish). I had my heart set on trying their ribs BUT they ran out :'( So I opted for the chopped pork and brisket. This time the brisket was the star with a beautiful smoke ring and a prefect blend of meat flavor and smokey goodness. Also tried the mac n cheese and the baked beans. Both were good and would order them again. Which I did on our most recent visit... We called ahead to make sure they were not out of ribs this time. I ordered a half rack of ribs and brisket. These ribs are the best I have EVER had (no joke!) They come without BBQ sauce on them and were perfectly smoked. The dry rub they put on them was fantastic, slightly spicy and sweet. The meat was very tender and was easily pulled off the bone. Well done Smokey D's! It is easy to see why you guys have won so many awards for your ribs.

Great old school BBQ joint. I ordered the turkey and sliced brisket. Turkey was really good probably the best I've had. Brisket was good too but not as special as the turkey. I was with a big group and food was delivered to our table quickly and courteously. They have huge trophies from contests and I can see why. Super good. Definitely go here if you are in Des Moines.

First time here, had the two meat platter with burnt ends, brisket, potato casserole and baked beans. Served with a $3 Bloody Mary. Didn't realize that you had to order at the window, before being seated, until after sitting at a table waiting for a while. Good was good, burnt ends were great, everything else was solid, as expected, good bbq. The Bloody Mary was made with mix, house vodka and a hint of spicy bbq sauce. Nothing special, but worth a $3 drink.

In my humble opinion this is the best BBQ place in the Des Moines metro area. The restaurant has a fun back story. It was opened after the owners won the TV Show BBQ Pitmasters on TLC. I get the Manhandler every time I eat at Smokey D's. It consists of two half loaves of garlic bread with three servings of BBQ meat between them. Just for good measure they also throw some pepper jack cheese on top. The manhandler is HUGE and at least for me anyways is definitely a several day meal. The BBQ meat has always been cooked great and the garlic bread and pepper jack cheese with it just make it that much better. When it comes to sides you have to try the potato casserole. It is home made and not made like any potato casserole you have tried before. It is definitely worth a try. For dessert give the Dode Bar a try. The Dode Bar is what Smokey D's calls a Scotcharoo.

I've eaten BBQ from all over the US. This place holds its own, if not topping, when compared to the best bbq joints from across the country. To top off the meat, the sauces are also in the same class. A cautionary note: do not order the Farm Boy unless you want an absolute huge amount of food! A friend and I ordered that and a 2 meat combo platter. We both ate, probably more than we should have, and still left with 4 to go boxes of food. The leftovers were easily enough to feed another 6-8 people!

Tons of great choices on the menu, I went with the brisket and sausage combo, the Mrs got the chicken and burnt ends. ...All very tasty and enough to fill ya up too. BBQ nachos were pretty good as well.

  • Joshua B.

Burnt ends were excellent, mixed the sassy and spicy sauces together for a pretty darn good combo. The sausage was good, I typically like it a bit spicier and with not as even of a consistency. The marinated veggies threw me off, I was expecting a warm bite and they're served cold, so my expectations may have thrown that off a bit. The line was about 15-20 ppl long by I still ordered within 5 minutes.

Interesting bbq place on the north side of Des Moines. It's kind of a mix of an order in diner and a fast take out place. The burnt ends are pretty good, but I have had better for the bbq pork. Family members had the ribs and said that they were not the best as well, but the brisket was really good. The sides were decent (I had the tater spuds and coleslaw) and the garlic bread over the traditional cornbread is interesting. Worth the trip, but unfortunately, I would not call it the best bbq place in Des Moines.

I've been to Smokey D's several times. Each time there are things I like and things I don't care for. I'd say their brisket is average - not super moist, not super dry. I didn't care for the pulled chicken, I found a few small bones which wasn't super appetizing. The mac & cheese is delicious and has a little bit of heat that builds. The baked beans have good flavor, nice and sweet. The potato casserole is 5 star! One of the best potatp side dishes I've ever had, and I love potato sides.

Saw this restaurant on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and was super excited to eat here. I got the smokey wings and they were definitely a disappointment. I ate 2 of them before I could no longer put myself through the pain. I told one of the servers that I didn't enjoy them and all she offered to do was put them in a take home box or throw them out. I was appalled that I wasn't offered another item in place. I went ahead and ordered the apple dumplings and they were pretty good. I would never come back to this place, not worth the drive!

We visited Smokey D's while visiting family and it was perfect for adults and children. FOOD: I ordered the half rack dinner plate, came with 6 ribs I think and they were amazing!! So tender with a beautiful glaze, No BBQ sauce needed. All the sides were delicious, I tired the potato casserole, baked beans, cole slaw, mac and cheese, potato salad and spud sticks. The only disappointing side was the mac and cheese because it was swimming in oil. My husband had the burnt ends and brisket, I wasn't a fan of either, both were a little dry. SERVICE: There's an ordering counter, staff was really nice and the food came out really fast. Soda was self service. Nice casual place with great food. HIGHLIGHTS: Ribs, potato casserole and potato salad. The potato salad contains horseradish, a nice take on a classic. Can't wait to go back!

Had this tonight with my gf. I had the BBQ sampler. It was $20. Consisted of 6 rib bones, some brisket, smoked sausage and burnt ends. I had some mac n' cheese and garlic bread on the side. For as much food as we got, it is an excellent value. The ribs: excellent, good smoke flavor, cooked appropriately, very tender, good dry rub on them. The BBQ sauce is on the side, I believe there's 5 different flavors to choose from. I preferred the hot. 8/10 Brisket: somewhat disappointing, decent smoke flavor, not a very pronounced smoke ring. A tad bit tough, I wasn't able to cut it very easily with a fork. Still not bad 7/10 Smoked sausage: a let down, this needs some work. The spicing was just... off, a tad greasy as well. 5/10 Burnt ends: these were the star of the meal, tender, excellent smoke flavor, melt in your mouth. Wish I had ordered more 9/10 Sides: the garlic bread was cut thick and had excellent flavoring, not at all overpowering 8/10 Mac n' cheese: excellent, good creamy cheese base with the proper viscosity, the pasta was cooked well, very soft. I'd like Smokey D's to start offering Jalapeno Mac n' cheese. 8.5/10 Ambience: casual, t-shirt and jeans is all that's needed here. No waiter service, order and pay at the counter and they bring the food to you. Service: very prompt. My estimation is that the restaurant was at %80 capacity and we got our food within 10 minutes of finding a table Keep up the good work Smokey D's! This is on another level compared to Jethro's. Also, they aren't anti-gun like Jethro's is. I WILL NOT GIVE MY HARD EARNED MONEY TO ANTI-GUN BUSINESSES.

We came all the way from boston to try this BBQ and I t was delicious! Although we would like to give it a 4.5, we settled on a 4 for the following reasons: - there was disagreement on the macaroni & cheese. I liked it, but most people (including the 2 year old) thought it was too spicy. - most people thought the garlic bread was meh. The chopped pork. The pulled chicken. The ribs. Those were all fantastic. We'll definitely be coming back.

Flew into Des Moines for business and wanted to try something different than previous trips here. Looked up Triple D visits and selected Smokey D's. My first BBQ endeavor for Iowa and I was pleasantly surprised. Ribs were very good and tender. No effort to coax the off the bone. Brisket was tender and nice smokey flavor. Three sauces to select from. All good with various levels of heat...but nothing scorching. Missed out on burnt ends so will return again but plan to get here earlier.

I'm very new to the Des Moines scene, and Smokey D's is already one of my favorites. The food is very solid, and perhaps most impressively, it's consistent. I'm from the south where we keep barbeque pretty simple and limited to pork only. But I was have really enjoyed the chicken, burnt ends and even the smoked cheeseburger. On the service end, I'll also compliment Smokey D's on how quickly they can plow through a line of several dozen people that wraps all the way from the front counter past the front door. I've stood in the back of the line tons of times, and it's never taken me more than five or six minutes to order. On top of that, the food always comes out incredibly fast and the folks coming around pre-bussing the tables is a nice touch. Thumbs up, Smokey D's.

Visiting from out of town, unfortunately went there for the positive reviews I read so gave it a try, boy what a big disappointment. Ordered pulled chicken, beef brisket and smoked turkey . Meat was very dry and over cooked not a lot of smoke flavor to it..I could not even enjoy any of it..you order at cashier you get assigned a number then server brings order to your table..the whole experience was very bad, I will never go back again..I had smoked BBQ before and this will only qualify for the "worse of the worst BBQ championship"..save your money and appetite and go somewhere else..

Very consistent. Burnt end are the very best and I get two orders just so I can take some home for leftovers.

Solid / real deal BBQ. Highlights were chopped pork with Sweet BBQ sauce. The sandwich bun was great. Mac and cheese was great. Brisket was good but lacked a little something (smoke/spice/something). Solid offering- I would do it all over again.

This place is so yummy! Love their Mac n cheese! Once you go, you'll understand why they've won so many cook offs!

The Ribs are consistently very good but the brisket has always been dry. Still looking for brisket as good as Papa's Bbq in Dallas,Texas. I will continue to come back to Smokey D's for the ribs. Maybe I will try chicken or Turkey next as I am done with trying the Brisket.

Could of been smokier... Fried pickles a little greasy, but really good! Loved their beans! Was very crowded so I knew it was a good one!!! I got the pulled chicken and it was good!! Their extra fiery sauce was very good!! I'm stuff here for a little while I'll definitely go back!

We love Smoky D's. I have family in Des Moines and when ever we are in town to visit them we eat or stop here to pick up burnt ends take home. We have tried brisket, pork, ribs and the burnt ends and they are all great but the burnt ends are the very best I have ever had. Being from the Kansas City area that is extremely high praise. I wish they were closer so we could have them more often.

  • Laura P.

Smokey D's BBQ is the standard by which we judge all barbecue restaurants. It is simply the best. My husband craves the ribs and says they are like eating candy. I'm a brisket and chopped pork gal and they are delicious -- always. My favorite side is the potato casserole. Just like Aunt Alice used to make! All the awards and trophies they have on display are a testament to the food here. Be sure to stop in any time for lunch or dinner!

Great Food! Recommend the burnt ends and hot beef. Fast service with nice variety of main dishes and sides. Highly recommended if you like BBQ. Plenty of parking. Can be crowded at normal lunch times, but crowd moves quickly. The daily comfort food will satisfy!

Food was great ! Service was fast and friendly. Passing through Iowa we decided to stop here and we're glad we did. Ordered the BBQ Sampler platter .. and sides . The ribs were fall off the bone perfection. I have never had better burnt ends .. EVER! Pulled chicken was great and the chopped pork was pretty good too.. loved the texas toast garlic bread ... Their mac and cheese is something special. Would definitely make it a point to come here again if passing through Iowa.

Now this is good BBQ. There is good reason they have so many awards on the walls, hallways, floors, etc...This is great BBQ...the best in Iowa!!! BBQ Sampler with 3 meats(1 lb) (sliced Brisket, sliced turkey, Burnt Ends) and a half rack of ribs with a sides of coleslaw, 2 mac and cheese, and fried pickles appetizer to round it off. Perhaps my eyes were bigger than my stomach. You know something is wrong when they give you your platter with tongs instead of a fork. The food did not disappoint and I nearly finished the whole order. I just wish i had more room for more Burnt Ends. Make sure to mix it up a bit with different flavors of sauces to get the full experience. This is my second trip to Smokey D's and I plan on making this a stop every time I am in town. Open a location in NYC and you will have a line around the corner every night.

If you want something that is like Famous Dave's then DON'T come here! This is totally different from Famous Dave's they seem to use dry rub instead of BBQ. I personally prefer Famous Dave's because the ribs are juicy and full of flavor. The burnt ends are in reality the only good thing to me. The environment is quite dull and the service is pretty bad. The decorations are bland do if you come here you better have people to keep you company or you might fall in depression. It gets somewhat loud since there always seems to be little kids around. I also had the pork tenderloin sandwhich which was pretty mediocre. If you want BBQ DO NOT come here!!! Go to Famous Dave's way better quality of food and service.

We stopped here on the way back to the East Coast, from Nebraska. I hadn't heard about it, but we were starving and needed a place with ample parking and close to the highway. Little did I know that we were in for award-winning and well-deserved BBQ...it was totally worth the extra 1.5 hours added to the trip. There were seven in my party, so we ordered "The Whole Pit." While the turkey was the only meat we finished half of, we got another order of burnt ends and brisket. Yes, it's THAT good (and the "feeds 4-6" probably means normal appetites...we needed more food). I hear Famous Dave's has more variety in sauces, but you don't even need sauce for most of it - the meat is delicious and juicy, and the meat just melts in your mouth. The burnt ends were by far my favorite, though the marinated veggies side runs a close second...I didn't get any mac & cheese, as it was devoured as soon as it was set on the table, but I hear that was good as well. Fries are generic, but the potato casserole was pretty good as well. There are statues of pigs everywhere, along with awards decorating the walls. We sat at a wooden booth, which was exactly as it sounds - not terribly comfortable, but it worked. The atmosphere is cute and it has a slightly divey feel, but the food is fantastic.

Have never been disappointed here. If you're in the mood for BBQ this is the place to go. We have been slowly working our way through the menu and I can't pick a favorite. Plenty of seating but it can get very busy.

Very good BBQ! It was a bit confusing when you first walk in, as it's not obvious you need to go to the left to stand in line to order. The ribs are very lean and the beans were great. Best fast food BBQ I've had, but not the best I've ever had.

Good BBQ, popular place with very fast service. Enjoyed pulled pork with sides for lunch. Recommend if you're on your way through town and looking for a decent lunch.

Love the appetizers! Fried pickles! Country fried steak fingers! Both are great. Get plenty of food for your money! The sauces are a little sweet for my taste but I am pretty picky. BBQ nachos were interesting and tasty. Was very pleased with how they packaged my to go order! Keeping hot food with hot food and cold with cold. My order traveled well clear to the south side of Does Moines!

Had the microwave brisket sandwich. It was thin dry and tasted like day old meat freshly zapped. What is it about bbq joints and crappy ass bread btw. Id like to say more but u get my point.

Have been here several times and never received service like I have tonight. Chicken wings were burnt to a crisp and salty to no end. Service was less than admirable with the food runner throwing our silverware on the table as if she was displeased to help us. If you come in within an hour before they close, don't expect good service. Save yourself the trouble and make the trip to Jethro's!!

Why did I give it 5 stars? Because YELP doesn't have 6. I ordered the pork tenderloin sandwich (they will cut it in half and add a bun on request for an additional $ .75). I can eat, I'm no competitive eater, but I can tell you that you should plan on spending the extra three quarters in your couch cushions for the split! This sandwich gets my nod for all tenderloin lovers. I love their BBQ, but when you are in the mood for something different, you won't be disappointed with this sandwich.

I looove smokey D's! The carry out is always fresh and convenient. You tell them when you can be there rather them telling you. Everything I've gotten there I have enjoyed. The ribs are dry rub which suits me because I don't eat BBQ sauce. The meat is always juicy and delicious. Yummmmm.

  • Stephanie M.

My husband says, "It wasn't terrible..." We ordered carry out passing through IA, BBQ chicken sliders and the beef brisket sandwich. Sadly, the sauce was the best part, and it wasn't on the meat. The chicken seemed processed and rubbery and the beef was dry and lacking flavor, despite the hefty portion.

Fine BPT along with great burnt ends!! SWMBO had pork plate with beans and mac/cheese - - pork had great flavor but had a few pcs of gristle & bone-sides were very good would like a place like this about 5hrs closer to home!!

Was my first time there. Was a bit confused on where to order my food at when first going in. Got the ribs they were best ribs ive had in a while. I prefer wet rub, but dry rub was pretty good. I like there mild bbq sauce the best. There chips and bbq/ranch sauce were a good pairing. Well worth going back.

I must be spoiled by my Southern BBQ joints in Atlanta because I just wasn't impressed by this spot. The pork sandwich left much to be desired and the mac 'n cheese had a strange taste that I couldn't put my finger on. I will say that the sauce was good and the service was nice. Unfortunately the food was not up to par.

I have had Smokey D's many times via catered lunches and have always enjoyed it. I finally made it to the actual restaurant for lunch. I was surprised that it was an at the counter ordering place. I think it makes sense because it is such a large place. We had a rather large group and they had a huge table in the bar area that worked perfectly. They got the food out to us fast! The sauces were ok. I ended up combining two of them. I would come back!

I usually love BBQ. I love this place usually. Last night was just average. In fact it was hard to eat because everything was so salty, that everyone at our table complained about it. The one constant was the Burnt Ends. Usually their moist because of the marbling at this spot on the brisket. Last night they were dry as a bone. The usual perfect amount of dry rub was overwhelming. It wasn't just this dish though. The fries were way over salted. The potato casserole was salty too. Just a bad night I think. Service was good, considering the sure volume of food they serve on Saturday nights. I think I'll look door a new place.

Smokey D's was the perfect road trip spot for our group of 6 (traveling to Minneapolis from Omaha). Below are the highlights: Location - Right off the highway and super easy to get to. Speed - Very fast to get through. You order at the window and the food comes to your table. This was ideal for our large group. Food - YUM! My husband and I did the BBQ Sampler and it was delicious. It was also a ton of food so we were able to bring some home with us. The sauces really made the meat shine. I guess I understand why they have so many awards!

I'm not a "bbq person" but this isn't KC Masterpiece from the grocery store. Their Mild and Sassy sauces are my favorites! I absolutely love getting BBQ dinner platter with their burnt ends & pulled chicken. It comes w/ texas toast and I order potato casserole and usually mac n cheese for my two sides. They are both out of this world! Very friendly staff, fast and great service, fun environment (they have a bar side and a dining side -- you can order food at either and beer at either as well). The owners are there often as well making sure everything is running to their standards and to give you a personal thank you with a smile. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for top notch BBQ!

This is unequivocally some of the best barbecue I've ever had. This place would go toe to toe with the legendary purveyors of barbecue in Kansas City. They also employ a similar business model. It's clean, but no frills. It's a Morton building with no seating inside. You order from the menu, you are issued a number and you stand in anticipation of your order. You're not going to find barn paneling or an old wagon wheel to help complete the illusion you're on a cattle drive from Texas. Its a simple, functional operation and the emphasis is on their food. I had the burnt ends and a side of their potato casserole. Their meat was explosive in flavor and I could pick up on hints of celery seed which I really enjoy. The meat was moist, tender and had an incredible amount of the flavorful black "bark." When ordering you have your choice of 4 from Iowa produced Russ & Franks sauces: mild, sassy and fiery and super fiery. I'll knock Smokey D's a bit for not producing their own sauces but these local offerings are really good and carry a considerable amount of clout. So does Smokey D's where you'll see many, many awards adhered to their wall. This is no-nonsense superior craft barbecue, and the best I've found in Iowa yet.

Went here for lunch while visiting my folks over the Christmas holiday. There were 4 in our party and we each ordered something different from chicken to pulled pork to ribs. This place is really about the meat and the day we were they they were doing it well. Reading some other reviews it sounds like folks maybe were there when either the head chef was on vacation or maybe someone new was in the kitchen or something because all of our meats were cooked to deliciousness to the power of 10. The side dishes are less impressive however. The potato casserole was as tasty as you would expect from most farm kitchens. So don't expect anything fancy, just plain unassuming Iowa cooking. Which is good because this is in Iowa. The other side dishes were okay.

What's good Food Hounds!!! Ole' Brim is back and ready to take you on a tour of one of the most fantasmic BBQ places that I've had the utmost honor to dine in! Seriously; my experience at Smokey D's BBQ in Des Moines, Iowa was quite possibly one of the most fulfilling eating experiences to date since the Food Hounds launched. I'll first tell you about the array of well over 400 local, national and regional awards that adorn the floors and walls of the location itself. No joke, these badges of honor are just fair warning that you are about to meet your meaty-maker... prepare to indulge on smoked delights that will blow your mind without draining your bank account! Lush and I were SO astonished with the spread of delicious eats that I don't know where should I begin? Ok - the beginners... the Country Fried Steak Fingers literally plays with your mind; lightly coated and fried crispy without being heavily breaded or greasy. The fingers were strips of juicy flank steak that when dipped into the homemade country dipping gravy - delighted the taste buds! I highly recommend the BBQ Egg Rolls which were hands down incredible. Delicious smoked pork mixed with a tangy coleslaw and wrapped in a classic Asian egg roll, slightly crisped and served with a BOSS of a sweet & spicy sauce! Now on to the meat... Oooh the meat... Everything and I mean EVERYTHING was in your face amazing! Every portion was a hearty helping of love served hot and fresh. My personal WIN was the melt in your mouth Burnt Ends which were bursting with unbelievable flavor behavior and a slight kick. I could simply sit and eat buckets of those bad boys at a clip; I found myself thinking about them days later! The fall off the bone Ribs were a VERY close second best; thick cut and juicy - the flavorful chunks of meat delight the soul. The Chopped Pork was done to perfection; cooked evenly without being overbearingly smokey... SO yummy! We found ourselves falling in love with the Beef Brisket which was cut thin, remained juicy and also melted in our mouths as we savored every last bite. The Texas Toast style Garlic Bread is a must have - it comes with many of the meals; but I'd definitely advise ordering more as it is WAY too delish! Large, light, fluffy and made in-house. We were utterly in shock and awe as we made our way to devouring the Breaded Pork Tenderloin... HUGE would be an understatement! Humorously laid between a typical hamburger roll, this sucker is a sight to behold. Picture if you will a large and in charge fillet of pork tenderloin, panko crusted and fried crispy - WIN. Not only was each meal a masterpiece of fantasticness; but the sides were certainly something to write home about as well... highlights were the Mac & Cheese, Baked Beans and scrumptious Potato Casserole. Perfect for large parties, events or to go for a quick lunch - this is certainly NOT a place to be missed. I look forward to revisiting again as soon as humanly possible... or pray for a UPS delivery!

Stopped here on our way across country. The food was very good, the decor was typical. The awards? Impressive. The Mac and Cheese has a bit of a bite, even my 18 month old liked it! We loved the potato casserole. My husband and nine year old said the ribs were quite tender. The cheese curds got a thumbs up, but the pickle chips were just okay. All in all, we would stop here again. Way better than the chains I can think of! The prices were good, $61 for 6 of us, including two appetizers.

All in our party of four thought this place deserved a great rating. Ribs good enough to eat without the sauce if you wanted. Brisket was very tasty. My brother loved the burnt ends he ordered. Great place to grab some bbq in a totally relaxed atmosphere. All four of us said we would gladly return for more when again in Des Moines.

Due to a recommendation from a colleague at work I went here for lunch last Saturday. It was further than my usual bbq joint, but I am always up for trying a new place out. If I were to rate this place just on the meat it would get 5 stars, but the rest of my lunch drove it down. I got the pulled chicken lunch platter with baked beans and cottage cheese. The chicken was excellent and no sauce was necessary, but being the sauce freak I am I had to eat half the order with sauce. The sides, except for the home-made chips, were pretty much straight from the store (no spice or spunk). They had 4 sauces, 3 of them were alright and none of them were what I wold call spicy (which disappointed me). Since it was my first time I didn't know the platter wasn't a sandwich, which was another disappointment but my fault. The price, although still cheap at under $10 was more than what I pay at my usual bbq place and I left a little hungry. By no means was the food bad, just not as good as expected.

My favorite spot for BBQ in Des Moines. The meat is always tender and the sauces are great. Service at this location is just ok. Better service is at their skywalk location during the weekdays. You can't go wrong with this place.

Stopped here on the way through from Kansas City, the service was great and very quick. I had the burnt ends and brisket - they were pretty tasty. The sides were fine, but the BBQ was very good. The restaurant is full of trophies that are well deserved.

Wow. I was told Smokey D's was good, but seriously an understatement. The food is not terribly overpriced for the speed, quality and quantity! I got the burnt ends sandwich and it awesome. The barbecue sauces were great as well! My wife had the pork sandwich and she said it was also very good.

excellent bbq. ribs are very good and brisket has great flavor. mac and cheese is very good. traditional walk up and order bbq joint. dont come in here thinking its a texas bbq joint cause its not. the meat is excellent. i would put almost as good as olkahoma joes in kansas city but not quite but still awesome.

Love Smokey D's! This location is very close to where I work, so lunch here is fairly common. I haven't had a bad meal here yet. You can find the usual meat selection common to BBQ joints, including pulled pork, brisket, chicken, ribs, turkey and so on. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of these choices. I usually stick with the brisket or turkey sandwich, but the burnt ends are also worth trying. As far as side items, the potato casserole, and mac & cheese are my favorites, but I just wish you got a little more with these items. They're very generous with their fries (or 'spud sticks' as they call them) however. My only complaint about Smokey D's are the rolls on which the sandwiches are served. Call me a bread snob, but growing up in Philly has spoiled me. I find myself always comparing bread and rolls to the ones I remember growing up, and I'm convinced that good bread doesn't exist outside of Philly. Happy hour at Smokey D's is great as well. Drinks are cheap. I mean $1.50 cheap. All in all Smokey D's is a great place that I will continue to visit frequently.

we ordered the Asian chicken wings to go. when we got home, the container had chicken wings that were so burnt that you couldn't taste the Asian sauce. they were charcoaled. terrible.

Yum. Yum! This place is fan-friggin-tastic. It's not the atmosphere or the service, it's the FOOD. The burnt ends are out of this world. I even love the turkey, which I normally find boring at other BBQ places. The sides are tasty, too - the potato casserole is my favorite - but they are pretty greasy! This is not a "diet" place. Just be prepared, there's not a dining room, this is a grab and go place. The line is often long on weekdays for lunch, but they move you through quickly, and you can gaze at their huge trophy collection while you wait. There are picnic tables outside if you do decide you can't wait to eat your BBQ! I also highly recommend them for catering!!! 9/7/10 Update - This weekend they opened their sit down restaurant - very casual, walk up to the counter, place your order, seat yourself. It's right next to the Harley Barn off I-80 - food is just as delicious, but now you can eat in climate controlled comfort, enjoy a drink from the full bar, and watch the patrons add new sloppy sauce stains to their t-shirts!

  • Scott M.

Smokey D's epitomizes the Des Moines eating experience for out of towners, you're expecting flavor from the way locals rave about it and end up staring at your sandwich wondering why you walked in. I get that they give you sauce on the table, but that's no reason the meat should be dry and tasteless. THe cole slaw was freshly de-thawed, so it had that going for it I guess. Free soda refills earned it the second star.

  • Stace T.

Being originally from Texas, this stuff doesn't begin to compare. Perhaps all Iowa BBQ is like this. I don't intend to find out. Even the "X firery" sauce here was pretty tame. We stopped in for lunch. My wife ordered the pulled pork with two sides; cole slaw and mac & cheese. She said her food was just OK. She's not from Texas. I ordered two meats (sliced brisket and smoked sausage) and two sides (cole slaw and potato salad). The brisket was tough and dry and the "smoked" sausage was a joke. Neither had any smoke flavor and the sausage was very, very mushy. The sides were completely uninspired. The table service was sparse. Once the food was brought, we never saw a server again. However, the bus boys were too efficient. When we went to the restrooms, we returned to find our table totally cleared of unfinished food, unfinished drinks and a not fully-read newspaper. PLEASE BELIEVE ME...stick with the Texas joints for really terrific BBQ. In fact, maybe I should open one in Des Moines.

  • Kevin H.

We have wanted to eat here for over a year and finally got the chance yesterday. Absolutely the worst BBQ I have ever had in my life. The brisket tasted like old beef and was also nuked. My wife had turkey and said it was pretty bland. The sides were OK but tasted as if not much effort was put forth. I think all those awards laying around the place must be for "participation". Definitely no award winning BBQ here. Take the extra time to drive north and go to Hickory Park in Ames. Never a Disappointment!

  • Chad G.

Best BBQ in central Iowa. Next best place is in Kansas City. We go a couple of times a week now they have the new restaurant on 2nd Ave. Ribs are the best dry rub ribs in town. They also have the best tenderloin in town. I have tried everything on the menu and nothing is bad. My kids also love to eat there. Staff is good and friendly.

    (5)
  • Kris D.

I guess I'm one of the lone dissenters on this one. There's no way the meat we were served was fresh off of the smoker-it was definitely microwaved. And was thin sliced, dry and flavorless. Service was really friendly for a fast food type setup.

  • Ed F.

They did a very nice job renovating this old building into a clean and well furnished restaurant. You order and pay at the counter, they give you a number to put on your table and they bring your food to you in no time at all. The service is good and the prices can't be beat. I had a BBQ Rib Platter (2 meats and two sides). I had the ribs, burnt ends with fries and cucumber & onion salad for the sides. All this for $11 plus change. I was a little disappointed in the BBQ though, not much on flavor. From the look and taste, I would guess they start it on the grill and finish it in the oven. Certainly not wood smoked. The sides were just decent, not great. I've had better ribs at Applebee's if that tells you anything. Smokey D's would make a good stop when traveling on I-80/I-35, just as quick as fast food and not much more in price.

Best ribs I've ever had. This place stands up to anywhere in Des Moines or even KC for that matter. Not open on weekends and carryout only (except for picnic tables outside).

We went to this place on Super bowl Sunday, February 3rd, for the first time. We will never go back and will make sure to ward everyone we know from ever going there! We ordered 2 dinners to go of brisket and chicken. We got mac n cheese and the new veggies. This is the worst BBQ we've ever had! Both meats were very dry and tough. Too dry and tough to eat. There was no smoke flavoring or any flavoring to the meat at all! None of the offered sauces were mild or un-spicy. I tried them all and they all just got hotter as I went thru them. Gross! The bread was hard as a rock, that came with the meal. I should've known the food was gonna suck badly because as I left, the lights went out in the superdome of the super bowl, ON TV as I was walking out! We will be going to Jethro's to try out their BBQ. The best we've ever had came from a little shack in Joplin, Missouri. It's a downright shame Smokey D's is in Iowa. It's an even bigger travesty that people were sad enough to give them awards for such horrible food! DO NOT try to compare it to ANY other BBQ in another state because that's an insult to real, good BBQ in those other states. I guess if you like dry meat with cold beer, this is a place to get both! In the end, we threw both of our dinners in the trash after eating the 2 best items, the mac n cheese and the veggies. Please save your hard earned money and DO NOT GO HERE!

  • Carrie M.

My husband and I ate there for the first time a couple nights ago. We eagerly anticipated the meal because we live close by and had heard a lot of great things about the place. We had a full rack of ribs (tough and really had to work to get the meat off the bone, flavor was alright I guess but we're used to the meat falling off the bone as you pick it up), side macaroni (per the suggestion of the order taker girl - it was WAAAY over cooked and mushy, just plain yuck) and the potato casserole (it was ok). We have had fantastic ribs all over this country. This place was a real disappointment. I'm just happy it was cheap and per some of the yelpers below, the dining area is REALLY no frills. Pop up tables in a morton building. Frankly, next time I'm in the mood for ribs I'll drive to Ames and go to Hickory Park. I may give this place one more try and do the burnt ends...if those suck this place will never see my money again.

  • Marvin H.

Moved here from Texas and this is the best BBQ we have found in the area so far. The food is well prepared and quite good. The burnt ends and ribs rocked! Also, the loaded fries can feed a family! Come hungry and if you leave hungry it is your own fault.

    (5)
  • Philip B.

I've been there twice now. The burnt ends are amazing and don't even need sauce. That's the way good BBQ should be. I've also had the chopped pork which was good but not great. They have several sauces that are more rated on heat vs flavor profile. I normally like something with a little heat but in this case the mild is my favorite. The beans are good but the coleslaw is flavorless. I will be back to try more.

This place is incredible. That's all. One of the few places for good burnt ends in Des Moines. Macaroni and cheese wasn't the best I've had, but still good, and better than the mac and cheese at Woody's (another place that I enjoy).

After visiting the zoo we decided to look up a BBQ place since there aren't any good ones in the Cedar Rapids area. From all of the reviews we thought we couldn't do wrong with a Smokey D's so that's what we picked. I would have to call this the fast food of BBQ. Sadly, the best thing was the cucumber and onion salad. The brisket had some hint of smoked flavor but it was probably disguised by the sauce but I had to use a lot of sauce because it was so dry. It seems like they started with good sausage but ended there. Nothing special about the preparation. My wife had ribs and I'd give the ribs a 3 or 4 out of 5. BBQ This in Cedar Rapids has this place beat and every BBQ place in Austin does better. We did manage to get a table far enough from the entrance and restroom but it was right next to the drink and ice machine. It probably sounds like I'm being picky but for $30 plus bucks I expected more. Maybe the BBQ entered in the contests (there are a lot of trophies in the dining area) is different from what they serve. Next time in the area, I'll be trying another BBQ place.

This is by far the best BBQ restaurant in the Des Moines area. The ribs were just melt off the bone tender. They have the usual assort of side dishes. The ones I tried (macaroni, beans) were good not great but you don't come to a BBQ place because of their side dishes although Sweet Baby Ray's in Chicago has the most amazing green macaroni.

Expectations were very high for a "Champion BBQ" the BBQ guy in Ankeny highly recommended D's. We ordered take out, Full slab of ribs, 2/3 # of brisket, mac and cheese and beans. As I waited for the order I looked over the multitude of trophies I thought, "I may have a new favorite place in DSM to get some smokey bbq". When we got home i looked at the brisket and ribs and I knew it was no good. the ribs were tough, the brisket was tough, there was some smokey flavor but the old principle of low and slow was not followed, it tasted like it had been under a salamander for way too long. I will try Smokey D's again to see if the restaurant is better than take out, but the measure of a restaurant is consistency and Smokey D's came out of the gate and died. Credit is due for the beans and the mac and cheese, they were good (could have ballanced the sauce and noodles a little better). I have a BGE and I eat BBQ all over the country when I travel for work. I have eaten Memphis in May winners BBQ at places like Pappy's, Super Smokers, Oklahoma Joe's. Smokey D's doesn't come close. The best BBQ in town is still Flying Mango followed by Woody's then Jethro's. Smokey D's is on par with famous dave. Way too much hype.

A reluctant four stars... When I go to BBQ, I want to be intimidated by the size of the portions. At Smokey D's, I felt overly confident that I would easily finish the two-meat dinner. That said, woooweee was that delicious. The ribs were fall off the bone good, and the sauce selection on the tables were stellar. The sassy sauce was a classic. Bottom line: great portions for Manhattan, but I'd expect better from Des Moines. Next time I'll drive to Kansas City.
